Sugar Pie's Story
In
October of 1996, I traveled to
Denver to pick up two Miniature
Schnauzer puppies and to
bring them
home with me. I was to take
two puppies from a litter and a
family member was
to take a third
from that same liter. However,
I ended up bonding with all three
puppies and
fell head over heals in
love with them. The third
puppy, which was to stay in Denver,
was a
bundle of energy and
obnoxiousness. She had a
personality and a half and was by
far the
alpha of the group.
She was a bit more than my family
member had "bargained" for, and as
a
result I went home with three
puppies instead of just the two.

The third puppy who unexpectedly
came home with was my sweet little
Sugar Pie. Bringing home my babies
was the most wonderful day of my
life. They were three little angels
brought to me in the midst of a
divorce and a very painful time in
my life. They healed me, they loved
me and they taught me to open my
heart and love again. Sugar Pie
showered me with "special kisses",
which included little nibbles in
them. She would also talk to me
exuberantly while throwing her head
back and howling like a little
coyote. I never cropped any of their
ears, choosing instead to leave them
natural. Sugar Pie's ears, which
never relaxed and flattened, stuck
straight up in the air permanently.
They added to her already strong
presence! One thing that I will
always remember about Sugar Pie is
the way she would pick up injured
birds in the back yard, bring them
in the house and lay next to them
trying to help them get better.
Imagine my surprise one day when I
turned around to find an injured
bird pacing back and forth in my
sofa frantically trying to figure
out how to get away! (LOLOL).

Sugar Pie
Sugar Pie crossed over the rainbow
bridge on October 16 of 2005. She
developed a cancerous mass on her
spleen. She passed away from a heart
attack during emergency surgery.
Losing her broke my heart and left a
huge hole in our home. Stinkers,
Peppermint and I didn't know what to
do without the leader of our "pack".
Then one day I found a little puppy
wandering in the parking lot at
work. He was lost, hungry and scared
half to death. He had been abused
and neglected. I picked him up, fell
in love and that was that. He came
into our home and became our new
"alpha" dog, helping the girls and
me to heal from our loss of Sugar
Pie. To this day, I believe that she
led Benjamin to us knowing that we
needed him. Today I have Stinkers
and Peppermint (Sugar Pie's
sisters), as well as Benjamin and
Festis, who I also rescued and
brought home.

The Sugar Pie block lights we offer
on The Mystic Moon Dance started as
a memorial to my sweet Sugar Pie.
Brenda made one for me as a
Christmas gift. I remember
opening the box that held the block
light in it. I took one look
at it and burst into tears. I
held the light to my chest and cried
for the longest time. This was
by far the most moving and emotional
gift I had ever been given.
But then that is Brenda....my sweet
best friend...always doing such
loving things for me. I am
honored beyond words to have her in
my life as my friend, sister and my
business partner. My prayer is
that these glass blocks can be as
moving and healing for you as mine
was for me.
Blessings to you my friends, Loni -
Quiet Bear
